Ofelia “MexMama” Faz-Garza was born in Fort Worth, Texas, and raised in Oak Cliff, Dallas. She is the proud daughter of Mexican migrants who rooted her in tradition and legacy while encouraging her to move through the world with courage and autonomy.
Her work is shaped by Nepantla, the in-between space where identities, languages, and possibilities overlap. She welcomes the perspective and power that come with growing older, seeing each season as an opening rather than a closing.
Ofelia is a queer mother to three spirited children, shares her life with a small constellation of pets, and is married to a wild-haired Tejano who deepened her love for Spanglish and Tex-Mex cultura.

Ofelia has been writing poetry since childhood, though she began sharing her work publicly in the 1990s with a debut in Persona, the Texas State University literary journal. After a period shaped by imposter syndrome, she returned to writing in her 40s with renewed clarity and purpose.
Her work has since appeared in Women in Nature: An Anthology, Outrage: A Protest Anthology for Injustice in a Post 9/11 World, BASTA! 100+ Latinas Speak Out Against Violence Against Women, Voces Anthology, as well as The Dallas Morning News, Latino Rebels, CALÓ News, and numerous zines.
Her poetry blends free-form structures with personal reflection, moving fluidly between Spanish, English, and Spanglish. Rooted in the everyday, her work lingers on ritual, memory, and the quiet acts that shape who we are and how our stories unfold.

Ofelia is a writer, cultural worker, and community bridge builder with over 20 years of experience in nonprofit and social service work. Her practice weaves art, storytelling, and ritual to create spaces rooted in care, justice, and collective belonging.
Her work includes Semillitas, a literary initiative cultivating a love of reading across generations; Con Safos, a multicultural arts initiative celebrating memory and tradition through festivals and community ofrendas; Señora Things, a creative exploration of aging and transformation for women entering a new season of life; Libro Tianguis, a community-centered book market; and En La Mesa, programs that gather QBIPOC writers for learning, sharing, and connection.
